SKIN CANCER

What is Skin Cancer?

Skin cancer is caused by an abnormal growth of skin cells and most often forms on skin exposed to the sun. While healthy cells grow and divide at a normal rate, cancer cells grow and divide much more rapidly. This rapid growth causes tumors that are either malignant (cancerous) or benign (non-cancerous).

Read on to see the types of skin cancer and their symptoms:

Basal Cell Carcinoma

This form of skin cancer usually develops on sun-exposed parts of your body, especially your head and neck, and appears as changes in the skin, such as a growth or sore that won’t heal. Basal cells produce new skin cells and sit beneath squamous cells. It may be a white, skin-colored, or pink bump; a brown, black or blue lesion; a flat, scaly red patch; or a white, waxy, scar-like lesion.

Squamous Cell Carcinoma

The second most common form of cancer, squamous cell carcinoma, is usually found on areas damaged by UV rays from the sun or tanning beds. Squamous cells sit below the skin’s surface and function as the skin’s inner lining. It can spread to the tissues, bones, and lymph nodes, and is harder to treat. It usually begins as a dome-shaped bump, or a red, scaly patch of skin that may itch or hurt.

Melanoma

This type of skin cancer starts in the melanocyte cells of the skin. Melanocytes can form together and create moles on the skin. In some cases, changes to melanocytes can cause melanoma skin cancer that can be diagnosed by removing tissue to check for cancer cells. Melanoma produces melanocytes that are located in the lower part of the epidermis and produce more melanin. When monitoring a new mole or an existing one, remember to check its asymmetry, irregular border, uneven color, change in diameter, or rapid change in size.
